How Much Does Proofreading Cost in the UK?
Proofreading cost in the UK is usually quoted per 1,000 words. In the rates we reviewed in October 2026, general proofreading was listed at roughly Β£5 to Β£16 per 1,000 words, and academic work often costs more. This guide shows what changes the price, with worked examples for a dissertation and a thesis.

If you are comparing quotes, the headline rate is only part of the story. This guide explains how proofreading is priced, what pushes the cost up or down, and how to work out your own total before you order.
The short answer
- Typical range: about Β£5 to Β£16 per 1,000 words for general proofreading in the UK rates we reviewed, with academic and technical work often higher.
- Main drivers: word count, academic level, deadline and how much work the text needs.
- Watch for: minimum fees, extra charges for fast turnaround, and services that mix proofreading with heavier editing.
- Our proofreading rate: from Β£10 per 1,000 words at undergraduate level, with a free sample first.
What affects the price of proofreading
Two providers can quote very different totals for the same document. These are the usual reasons.
- Word count. Most providers charge per 1,000 words, so a 15,000-word dissertation costs about three times a 5,000-word essay.
- Academic level. Master’s and doctoral work is denser and more technical, so rates rise with level. Our own rates go up by level for this reason.
- Turnaround. A standard deadline is cheapest. Fast turnaround, such as 24 or 48 hours, usually adds a surcharge.
- Type of service. Proofreading corrects spelling, grammar and punctuation. Editing and structure feedback goes further and costs more. Check which one a quote actually covers.
- Subject. Highly technical subjects can add a supplement because they take longer to check.
- Minimum fees. Some providers set a minimum charge per order, which affects short documents the most.
Worked examples
The table uses our proofreading rates of Β£10, Β£15 and Β£20 per 1,000 words for undergraduate, master’s and MPhil or PhD level. Totals are before any deadline surcharge and before VAT where it applies.
| Document | Words | Undergraduate | Master’s | MPhil / PhD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essay | 3,000 | Β£30 | Β£45 | Β£60 |
| Dissertation | 10,000 | Β£100 | Β£150 | Β£200 |
| Long dissertation | 15,000 | Β£150 | Β£225 | Β£300 |
| Doctoral thesis | 80,000 | n/a | n/a | Β£1,600 |
For comparison, a 10,000 to 15,000-word dissertation at the general rates of Β£5 to Β£16 per 1,000 words would come to roughly Β£50 to Β£240 before any minimum fee. The lowest quotes are not always the cheapest once minimum fees, deadline charges and the level of checking are included.
Compare the total for your word count and your deadline, not the rate per 1,000 words alone.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Ask for the total price for your exact word count and deadline, in writing.
- Check whether the work is proofreading only or includes editing, and whether you can choose.
- Ask whether the editors are human and whether any AI tools are used on your work.
- Check for minimum fees, deadline surcharges and technical-subject supplements.
- Ask for a free sample so you can judge the quality before you pay.

How to keep the cost down
- Do a self-edit first. Cleaner text needs less checking. Read it aloud and fix obvious slips before you send it.
- Leave time. A standard deadline avoids a rush surcharge.
- Send the final text. Paying to proofread a draft you will change later means paying twice.
- Choose the right service. If your university only allows proofreading, you do not need to pay for heavier editing. Check your university’s policy first: is professional proofreading allowed at UK universities?

How much does it cost to proofread a dissertation in the UK?
It depends on length, level and deadline. At our rates, a 10,000-word undergraduate dissertation costs Β£100 and a 15,000-word master’s dissertation costs Β£225 for proofreading, before any deadline surcharge. Other providers quote different rates, so compare the total for your word count.
Is cheap proofreading worth it?
Not always. Very low rates can come with minimum fees, little checking or automated tools. Ask whether a human reads every page and ask for a free sample before you decide.
Do you charge per word or per hour?
Proofreading is normally charged per 1,000 words, which makes the total easy to predict. Hourly pricing is more common for one-to-one tutoring, which we charge by the hour.
Does a faster deadline cost more?
Usually yes. Fast turnaround, such as within 24 or 48 hours, normally adds a surcharge. Standard turnaround at Ideapad Writers is 5 working days, and we show any surcharge in your quote before you pay.
